Weird Science
We had the annual Science Fair last week. This is Hootis' 3rd year participating. We have learned a few things in 3 years. Mainly, the project is a LOT cooler if the engineer gets involved.
Case in point: Year #1 - homemade flashlight that would have made McGyver proud. Electrical tape, wire, batteries and a little lightbulb were used.
Year #2 - experiment using food coloring and limp celery stalks.
Year #3 - Pulley system involving a ladder, rope, multiple pulleys and clippy things, and weights (apple juice bottles filled with water) to be lifted with the pulleys.
If you haven't guessed, 2 out of the 3 years involved the engineer.
Now that we are Science Fair Pros, we've discovered that the allure, fun and excitement of the Science Fair is standing by your display and showing off for all the other students. Apparently the actual "science" part is secondary.
If you haven't guessed already, "limp celery and food coloring" is just not that exciting for the other students. BUT, lifting weights with a pulley system is a BIG HIT. In fact, the kids were waiting in line to each take their turn.
I call that a GREAT PROJECT!
Hootis was on cloud 9 when she got home
thanks, mr. engineer man.
