my version of spring cleaning

It all started last fall in our guest bathroom.

After living with boring/bland/blech off-white walls for three years,

I finally got motivated enough to paint. It took about a day. I'm glad I waited three years to get to it.

Then I planned to decorate, but before I knew what happened, it was Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then our vacation, then Christmas, then New Years......you get the idea.

Finally, last month, I finished with the decorating. I wanted a beach theme, but no so beachy you would gag.

I'm still wondering about the anchor. I think it's possibly too big. The shells and rocks are from Oceanside and the "Catch me by the sea" is a print from SaraJane. The glass jar, basket and anchor are from TJ Maxx. I already had the shelves, but I spray painted them white.

After I was done painting (back in October) I took all the painting supplies into our upstairs kid's bathroom so I could paint it too.

Guess what is still sitting there five months later?

Ahem.

So logically, now that I am ready for another project, I start overhauling the kitchen/family room. (Let's just pretend there is not paint and supplies in the bathroom. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting.)

I decided I was sick of the curtains and color scheme. Although I put them up shortly after we moved here, it's the same general color scheme I've used for, forever. See the curtains below.

So I took everything down, including all the curtain rod stuff that came with the house.  I patched holes and painted.

Then I put up my new valance thingies. I wanted a basic linen color and a simple shape, nothing too poofy or flouncy. Sort of like a roman shade, but less. So I
sewed a panel and hung it in each window.

My plan is to have neutral windows but have punches of color with accessories.

Like pillows! I've been sewing these all week.

Then today while at Ross looking for accessories, I happened upon two rugs that would be perfect. I didn't go there planning to buy rugs, but when decorating destiny calls, you must listen.

New (neutral) rug!

When the day comes that we replace the worlds worst kitchen floor, I will be super happy, but for now, these little changes are fun.
