mini vay-cay: summer 2013

Back a few weeks ago, we realized that school was starting and we wanted to do something fun as a last minute hurrah to summer.

But what could we do? Our favorite place ever, California is too far away, all the national parks seemed like a lot of driving just to get there, I'm not really a camper and frankly, I have limited things I can do in the heat.......so what to do? what to do?

Finally we settled on Salt Lake City. It seems odd,but we realized we haven't done the church history sites in a long time and it would be fun for a one day get away.

Is it silly to take a mini vacation just 25 miles away? Maybe. But really it's just about having a change in your routine, and seeing new things. So why do we drive for hours and hours to vacation when you can do the same in half an hour? At least, that's what we told ourselves!

Anywho, we made a plan, reserved rooms at a hotel right at City Creek and headed up for a one day vacation.

We started out by splitting up. Stick and the three big kids went to the temple to do baptisms and I took the littles to the Church History Museum.

Since we've been to the Church History Museum lots of times, we skipped the normal exhibits and headed upstairs to their kids section to play. It seemed strange to be there without the A family.  They are always our Museum buddies!

But wait! Right before we went into the kid's section, there was an exhibit on the Boy Scouts of America, so we checked it out too, being the scouting crazed family that we are.

Then we went into the kid's section.

The kids really, really love these puppets. I have to admit, they're pretty neat.

Then we went to go check out the Norman Rockwell -Boys Scouts of America exhibit.  Did you know I looooooove Norman Rockwell? Well, now you know. I love Norman Rockwell! And if you add together Normal Rockwell + the BSA you have a win-win situation!

The security guard didn't seem to care that I was taking pictures with my phone, so I snapped away. One man however, got a little to close to a painting and an alarm sounded, so that was exciting. I don't think he was trying to steal the painting, I'm pretty sure he was just looking at the details really, really close.

The picture below caused my boys to ask with a laugh in their voice, "Uh, mom? Why is that Boy Scout wearing a skirt?"

Whew, that was a lot of pictures, but let me assure you, there were even more paintings, I just took pictures of my favorites!

The boys really wanted a picture of this, on our way out of the museum.

While they explored the little log pioneer cabin just south of the Museum, I enjoyed the flower gardens.  Hello, sweet potato vine.  One of my favorites, and it was everywhere.

to be continued....

Wow, they had that Norman Rockwell exhibit in the Church History Museum? That looked fabulous. I, too, love NR.

Seeing those pictures brings me right back to my "old home".
