Home Design 101....aka....bleeeh

After years of waiting and procrastinating, we are in the process of designing our future home. We've worked on it ourselves off and on for several years now using a design program on our computer. A few months ago, we decided we didn't have the time/knowledge/patience to take my little home design program design far enough that we could turn it into our city for approval. The next step was to find an architect to work with. In the end we hired a "home designer" who does the same things as an architect, but is a lot cheaper. We are all about cheap, so everyone was happy.

These are the steps we've taken:

  • Give her our plan that we've toiled over for a long time.

  • She revises our plan and makes a lot of changes.

  • We don't like her changes and only like our plan.

  • I make a list of 8 things we want changed, and e-mail it to her apologizing.

  • She makes a new plan, including most of our changes and adds a whole lot of new stuff.

  • We don't like any of the new changes. After looking it over for approximately 3497 hours, we eventually realize she does know what she is doing in a few areas we wanted to be stubborn and obstinate about.

  • Nevertheless, I send another list of 20 changes to be made, complete with profuse apologizing and smiley faces of "we're sorry but, ..."

  • She complies with our list of 20 demands/changes but politely informs us that "most of them are impractical and dumb" or something like that.

  • Stick may or may not commit hari kari tonight when he gets home from work and I show him the new plan, insisting that we work on it before we can sleep.

  • In the meanwhile, the plan that I wanted to hover around 3500 sq. ft, is now are mere 89 sq. ft. from 4000 sq. ft, not including the 4000 sq. ft. unfinished basement. It turns out every time you tell the designer "smiley face-make 20 changes-smiley face" she adds more "smiley face-square footage-smiley face".

  • The end. So far.
