weekly 2015.11.8

Our ward had a Court of Honor tonight with four new Eagle Scouts. In the last six months, we’ve had 8 Eagles awarded. I think that’s pretty amazing. As they were reading about a bunch of the fun/hard/crazy/typical things that the scouts have done, the thought came to my mind that Stick had been in charge of all those various activities. He’s been the Scout Master for years now and was the 11-year-old scout leader before that. Of the four boys that earned Eagles tonight, he’s been heavily involved with three of them. One of the boys even chose Stick to receive his “mentor” pin, which made me tear up a little. A lot of people like to disparage scouting these days but it really is a great program and it’s been so awesome for Stick to be able to be a part of these boy’s lives.

Spencer declared tonight that one year from today he will be getting his Eagle too. And I think he may just do it! In other Scouting news, a few days ago while sewing merit badges on Spencer’s sash, I figured out a much easier way to do it than sewing each individual badge on one at a time. Three at a time baby! With one continuous running stitch! Why oh why couldn’t I figure that out years ago!??!?!

Yesterday we did the big room switch-a-roo. And now large parts of the house look like we’ve been hit by a tsunami because the day ended and the boys weren’t done. Spencer is now upstairs, Thomas is downstairs in Rachel’s room and Aaron is downstairs in the room that Thomas and Spencer were in. When it became apparent that Aaron was not going to be able to “hang out” with his buddies last night due to his room changing duties, three of his buddies showed up at our house and started moving furniture, junk, etc. so that Aaron could fulfill his responsibilities. Such nice friends, no?

Spencer’s mind was blown today when it came up in conversation that Chuck Norris is actually a real person. He had no idea, and then he proceeded to ask every single kid in the family if they “knew that Chuck Norris was a real live guy?!?!”  (They all knew.) Ha! So funny.

Yesterday we had NO sports. I can’t express enough how great it was. Other than when we’ve been on vacation, I don’t think we’ve had a sports free Saturday since last March when we had a few weeks break between basketball and soccer. It felt like the longest day ever. Although that might be due to the fact that I got up at 6:15 am to cook waffles and bacon for Stick and the Scouts who came to our house for breakfast after doing early morning baptisms at the temple.

It was just so nice to get some things done around the house and yard. I brought in my last few plants that I’m trying to “overwinter” because it was definitely below freezing Friday night. I’m trying to overwinter so many plants that I’m running out of space to put them! Ah, the life of a crazy plant lady.

Rachel just called to ask me a question and I could hear continuous banging in the background. When I asked about it, she informed me that she was hammering her roommate’s key because it got bent. She told me that she uses the tools that Grandpa F gave her about once a week for one thing or another. Way to go, Grandpa F!

I taught RS today about “Temporal and Spiritual Welfare.” I spent part of the lesson reading excerpts from Emily Call Warner’s blog posts about the tsunami/earthquake they experienced in Japan. It’s a good reminder to be prepared. We just don’t know what will happen tomorrow. I hate to think of how cold and miserable we would be now that it’s winter if an earthquake hit and we lost all our power. Get your stuff prepared people!!!!

Over and out.
