the big trip 2014 - day one
We have a guest blogger today. Rachel is recapping her trip with Travis. Today she is talking about her first day and a half.
-----------------------------------
The plane ride was awesome. It is so crazy that I could be in Utah and a few hours later be across the whole country. Also the cookies and sprite they give you are unnaturally delicious, they are way better than they are anywhere else (probably because you are starving).
When we got off the plane we went from a bus to a train to the metro to a shuttle. It was crazy, welcome to the world of public transportation, all of these things were so strange to me because I am used to driving EVERYWHERE!
Our hotel had a really cool moving wood sculpture.
We unpacked and rested for a bit then went to Ruth's Chris, which was super yummy. It was really good but I was almost to tired to even eat.
The next morning we got up and headed to Arlington to see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, it was basically a humongous cemetery.
When we got to the tomb there were a ton of people there. Every few minutes they do a changing of the guard which is cool to see. They also do a wreath ceremony where a school who is there hangs a wreath in honor of the soldiers, but the wreath only lasts a few minutes until the next school hangs theirs. It was pretty funny.
Next we took a taxi to see Abe. I've always seen pictures but they don't do it justice. He is HUGE.
Next we went on a LONG walk to see the Jefferson Memorial we passed some cool things on the way.
The Jefferson Memorial was also very cool. There are lots of great sayings on the walls about how America could not survive without God. My dad about had a heart attack when he saw these in the gift shop.
Then we stopped by the "Signer of the Declaration" Memorial on our way to the Washington Memorial.
The memorial was cool but it was still getting fixed.
Next we made a quick visit to John Paul Jones, it was literally this little thing in the middle of the street.
We stopped by the WWII memorial and took pictures of our states!
We tried to go visit Obama, turns out there's a gate. We also saw their garden, I wonder if they have ever been in it.
After this we went to the National Archives and saw all of the American documents. Obviously pictures were not allowed, but it was cool to see them in real life.
Then we headed back to the hotel so my dad could go to his awards ceremony and I watched TV and looked out this window.
to be continued....
