Monday Rant
Today the kids had their first day of swimming lessons. Invariably I end up sitting in the bleachers talking/listening to a bunch of the other moms while we watch the kids swim.
Now I am not the most outgoing person in the world, but I can hold up my end of the conversation when pressed. One mom, the most talkative of the bunch who happened to be sitting right next to me, eventually found out I had 4 kids swimming, along with Houdini at my side. She was expecting her 5th, so she wanted to talk about "the motherhood of 5". Which is all fine, and a topic of conversation that is fine with me.
BUT, eventually she asked, what in my opinion is a major fau pax, "So, complete stranger that you are, who I met 15 minutes ago, are you going to have MORE kids in the future? Or are you done?" ahem. This is where I draw the line. Seriously, lady, I don't even know you and you are inquiring into my reproductive decisions?
I am probably way too annoyed by this, but the fact is, I have had this same conversation with so many other complete strangers that it honestly boggles my mind. An inquiry from a friend or close family member is fine with me, but a complete stranger? Please. When did we become a society that was ok with personal and private inquiries into the lives of strangers? Probably about the same time that "reality tv" arrived on the scene. The main difference is that the people on Reality TV, SIGN up for the ogling. I don't.
I need to come up with a good response to this inquiry, but usually I am so dumbfounded by the question, I can't respond in the proper snooty manner that I would like. Definitely something to work on!
Ok, done venting. I feel muuuuuch better now.
** I do recognize the irony in my complaint of being ogled. Being the blogger that I am. My feeble defense is that I choose to blog and only blog what I choose! So there.
