program week
And, once again the last week of school means everyone is doing a program.
Harry and Spencer both had patriotic America themed programs.
Harry had a speaking part in his program. He said:
"On July 4th, 1884 the statue was finally finished in France. She was taken apart and shipped to America."
(Speaking of the statue of liberty.)
-Spencer's program-
I laugh every year because they line the kids up in height order to place them on the program stand, and every single year Spencer is next to this girl M.
Here's proof.
And more proof.
He's always the tallest boy. She's always the tallest girl. Except that this year, for the first time, she's got him beat. (He just saw that I typed that and is insisting that he's still taller than her, but I have my doubts. Ha!)
From my spot in the audience, I had the perfect view of my boy.
The fifth graders are encouraged to earn the "Great American" award. It's a lot of work, and I'm happy that Spencer worked hard and earned it. Not very many of the fifth graders earned it.
To get the award the kids have to:
- participate in the 5th grade State Fair
- find, research and write about an immigrant ancestor
- learn and explain the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance
- learn and present the required American History songs
- Memorize all 50 states and locations
- Memorize 50 state capitals
- Memorize 50 state abbreviations
- memorize the first part of the Declaration of Independence
- Memorize the Preamble to the Constitution
- Memorize all of the Presidents of the United States
- Memorize the first and last verses of the Star Spangled Banner
- Memorize the Gettysburg Address
Even though I grumble a little about having to go to the school so often for all these programs, I do like to watch the kids in action.
I especially love that the programs teach such great things about American and patriotism.
Yay school!

Whoa, that's a whole lot of memorizing. I can't even remember what I did yesterday. Or two hours ago.
