our birthday bonanza bash -not for the faint of heart
Earlier this summer in a moment of temporary insanity I agreed to host two birthday parties on the same day. Today was the day! Oh boy. No. Literally, OH BOY. Like 20 of them at my house. Oh boy.
You see, Rooney is a turkey baby. He was born Thanksgiving weekend, making it really hard to ever have a fun birthday party. The weather is generally rotten and everyone is out of town. Poor boy.
In that moment of temporary insanity I said, "Ok! We'll just have a early birthday party the same day as Brick's party! We'll do some kind of water thing in the backyard." Then I promptly forgot about it.
Although as it turns out, soon to be eight year old boys and (not really soon) to be twelve year old boys don't forget about these kinds of (temporary insanity) promises. Oh boy.
This morning from 10 to noon, we had Brick's party. For a split second right before the guests arrived, I had a mini panic moment thinking, "What am I doing?!?!?!How do I get myself into these things!!!"
Do you know that my children don't eat cake?
The birthday boy chose donuts instead.
This is the "some kind of water thing in the backyard" part.
We played one game that I made up 3.2 minutes before we played it!
Freeze tag with wet sponges. It was a hit and lots of fun until everyone started cheating and tattling.
Hootis thought these boys were really wild.
(I didn't think they were too bad.)
She didn't know what was about to hit, two hours later......
The big boy party.
Ten crazed boys.
I took these pictures at the start of the party and then took my camera inside out of fear it would get drenched.
These boys ran and ran and wrestled and ran and threw bucket after bucket of water. They pulled each other up and down the slide. They had so many kids on the slide, the stakes pulled up and the whole thing tipped over. Four times. They turned off the "air" so the slide would collapse with people on/in it. They drenched each other with hoses. They threw soaked sponges at each other so hard they made a "thwack!" sound. Then they'd laugh and say, "OWWW!" and do it again. The water, oh the water. (I hate to think what our water bill this month will be from today alone.) I went downstairs twice to make sure they weren't flooding the basement.
It was loud and exhausting.
I had to keep escaping into the house for a bit of silence and sanity.
All in all, they had a great time.
( No one was killed.)
We had one injury when a boy (who got his braces on yesterday)
got smacked in the mouth with a bucket.
Ouch.
He survived.
My favorite (not) part of the whole day?
When, instead of blowing out the candles on his birthday treat*, Rooney burped on them.
So proud.
*No cake for him either. Raspberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream.

Oh. My. WORD. Well, I am glad that I didn't add to that insanity yesterday! Are you alive today? Or are you just laying there staring at the wall with a blank face muttering incoherent sounds?
