reviews~ 1 movie~4 books

Stick and I watched The Pride of the Yankees this weekend because I saw it at the library and remembered that possibly it was famous, so I figured, why not?  Yes, it's a baseball movie.  My love for watching actual baseball is similar to my love of sticking poison filled needles in my eyes, so you may wonder why I would willingly submit to a baseball movie?  That's the wonder of the modern ages, if you don't like the DVD, you turn it off! Unlike watching an actual baseball game where you're longingly thinking of poison filled needles..... Anywho, back the subject at hand.  I enjoyed the movie.  The actual baseball parts were minimal, there's a love story and Gary Cooper is easy on the eyes.  Two thumbs up!

I've been on a reading kick lately.  My reading obsession usually goes in spurts and right now it's full bore. I just can't get enough to read and the library is my best friend.  Mwa mwa mi biblioteca!

Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank
This is actually a book my kids are supposed to read for their book club.  Due to my obsession for something to read I started reading it while eating lunch last week.  I read the whole thing in two days.  Turns out I'm not going to let my boys read it, due to some adult moments (just a few, but enough for me to nix it) but I really did like the book.  If you are in the mood for a book about an Apocalypse (and really who isn't in the mood for that?) this is just the thing to make you think.  I'm still thinking about it a few days later.  Two thumbs up!

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How My Mother Raised 10 Kids on 25 Words or Less by Terry Ryan
Another book I read in just two days.  Light, easy reading about a mother of 10 kids, with a deadbeat husband, who provides for her children in a really unusual way. Enjoyable reading, not exactly life altering, but I do recommend it. Two thumbs up.

The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jaqueline Kelly
I picked this up at the library for my kids because it's award winning and it has a really cute cover.  (Yes, I'm shallow, I do pick books by their cover)  Again, my reading obsession forced me to read this too.  About a young girl in the 1800's who is struggling to find her true identity among a house full of brothers, a science obsessed grandfather and a mother determined to make her a lady.  One weird thought I had about the book, it's supposed to be set in the 1800's but Calpurnia's "voice" seemed very modern to me. Despite this, two thumbs up.

Truce by Jim Murphy
This is actually another kid's book. You won't believe me when I say I never read kids books, seriously, this trend is really unusual for me. (Ask my sisters, they will verify.)  I really loved this book.  It's inspiring and sad.  It also made me mad because obviously my high school history teacher taught us nothing.  I learned more about World War I in this short book than I did in a whole year of high school history. Sorry Mr. B, I know you were really popular, (probably because you never actually taught anything) but now I'm mad at you.  Taking place during Christmas 1914, in the depths of World War I, there were widespread un-official ceasefires.  Both sides decided to lay down their arms and celebrate together.  You may just shed a tear or two reading about it.
