weekly 2015.10.25
We have had a great day. Bekah begged Rachel to come home for the Primary program, so she did, bringing her roommate and another friend. The girls were fun. We enjoyed talking to them at dinner, you could just tell they are such on the ball, good girls. Both girls have mission calls and go to the MTC in February. The GrAndersons were there too so we had a fun afternoon.
Bekah was so happy they came to see her “own special part” in the program. I painted her nails Saturday night, she felt like she needed it because of her “own special part”….obviously. During the program, I had a moment there where it felt so strange that we only had two kids up on the stand.
This moment pretty much matched up with a few other “moments” I’ve had this week. First of all, well this is really dumb, but it was “Back to the Future” day this week. The day, October 21st, 2015 was the day they went to in the second movie when they went forward to the future. I was there in 1985 when the movie came out. I saw it several times in the theater due to my obsessive love for Michael J Fox. And now, fast forward; it is October 21st, 2015, a date that back then seemed so far away, practically light years away. And here I am a 43-year-old, married mother of 7. The whole thing made me feel strange in a way that I’m not adequately describing here. I watched the first two movies again this week. I still enjoyed the first but did not remember how much bad language it has. (A LOT.) I did not like the second that much back then originally, and still didn’t like it.
My other moment was about Thanksgiving. I realized in thinking about Rachel at BYU that she probably has friends that have nowhere to go for Thanksgiving, just like me in my BYU days. Twice, my Aunt Fae invited me (and a friend of my choice) up to her house in SLC for the holiday. Not just for Thanksgiving day, but the whole holiday weekend. We went up on Wednesday and stayed until Sunday night! We would go to her house, eat her food, sleep late, watch movies all day and be total lunks. And she was kind and gracious as ever to me and to my tag along friend who was a total stranger to her. So in thinking about this I realized that I am now Aunt Fae. It’s my turn to be a gracious hostess to whoever Rachel knows that needs Thanksgiving. It was an enlightening moment. And it made me feel old.
In other news….
Stick and the two big boys went to the BYU game yesterday. They had the good VIP seats that include eating at the fancy tent. I’m not sure if the blowout game was actually that fun but eating at VIP tent makes it worth it.
Since they were off having fun, I told the littles that if they got their Saturday jobs done quickly, we could go to the dollar theater and watch “Inside Out”. Properly motivated, they worked quickly and we went to the movie. Hmmm, the movie, the movie, what to say about the movie? Ok, how about this…..I totally hated it. The boys sort of liked it and Bekah didn’t like it and, oh yeah, I fell asleep in the middle of it. So that was kind of a bust, other than the fact that it’s fun to have an outing together. It’s strange though, a lot of people liked/loved the movie, just not me. I prefer my movies to have an actual plot line.
Harry asked me yesterday if our Subaru was junky? I told him, “yep, a little.” He replied, “Oh. It makes me feel poor when we drive it.” I then told him I was glad that it made him feel poor, which was apparently super confusing. Explaining our ongoing campaign to not have spoiled, rich, entitled kids is confusing to a ten-year-old. Maybe you have to be 11 to understand that concept. Although I’m pretty sure the teenagers in this house just think it’s just another one of mom and dad’s crazy plans that they have to constantly explain/justify to their friends.
I took the Excursion into a shop this week to get the fender bender issues fixed. They gave me a rental car to drive in the meantime. I originally thought it might take a couple of hours to fix, but then they had to order a part, so I had the rental for 48 hours. I felt like a true legit soccer mom zipping around town in a low boxy Ford Flex minivan. It was actually a pretty nice car if you could get past the whole “toaster on wheels” look of the exterior.
Thomas had a little excitement at school this week. He was in woodshop videoing (with an iPad) his teacher who was explaining a woodworking procedure. The teacher estimates that they videoed for about ten minutes straight. When they were done, Thomas turned, handed the iPad to another student and then passed out. He fell backward like a chopped down tree, right onto his back on the cement floor. Afterward he could not remember what happened; just that he woke up propped on the floor with his teacher shaking him. The weirdest thing ever. He’s been absolutely fine since then so we think (hope) that he just had his knees locked while filming and made himself pass out. Once before, years ago, he had his knees locked while getting a haircut and he passed out. So it’s possible that’s what happened this time. We hope.
Aaron and Thomas went to the big rivalry football game against Alta Friday night at Alta with their friends. The rivalry was made even more exciting when both schools got tagged with vulgar spray painted tags sometime Thursday night. But in the end, Alta got the last laugh, ‘cause they won.
Spencer played his last soccer game (for a while) on Saturday. He scored and his team won. We are trying not to think about the fact that he left his duffle bag full of gear, including soccer stuff and basketball shoes and a new basketball at the field two weeks ago and now it’s nowhere to be found. UGGggghhhhhh.
Harry is being a caveman for Halloween so I went to JoAnns and bought some fake fur which gave me the heebie-jeebies even though I know its fake. And it’s shedding all over the entire house, so it’s like having a dog without all the fun. And without all the poop, so at least there’s that.
Over and out.
