Hawaii: day 9

1.1.2015

We thought it would be fun to ring in the new year at the Polynesian Cultural Center. We got there right when it opened and in the parking lot, before we even went inside, we ran into our neighbors the O's. We didn't know they were in Hawaii, and vice versa.

Have you been to the PCC?
There are seven different "villages" that you visit where you learn about Polynesian culture, watch shows and do hands on activities.

We started out by taking the very first canoe ride of 2015 to the Hawaiian village. We were the first to arrive, so Bekah got private hula lessons.

After a while the kids realized they could get free tattoos in all the villages.

Considering the fact that I hate temporary tats and usually make the kids put them on the bottom of their feet (ha!), it's hard to explain how/why they got so many.

Dancing in Tahiti.

Spear throwing in Tahiti.

In the afternoon they do a Canoe Pageant showcasing dancing from all the different islands.

This guy in Samoa was hilarious.

We also loved the drum show in Tonga (that I have no picture of).

Can you see the Samoan guy that climbed up the tree?

He got up so fast, I could barely get my phone out in time.

He's actually descending here.

Blurry close up.

Spencer happily received some coconut goods in Samoa.

She wanted a close up of her princess tattoo.

Attempting to twirl Poi balls in Aotearoa (New Zealand).

We went to a Luau for dinner and the kids were scarfing down these purple rolls.

We had tasted poi in the Hawaiian village and they didn't like it so I had to laugh at how many purple poi rolls they ate.

After the Luau, we went to the "Ha: Breath of Life" show.

We had front row seats and the show was just incredible.

It was such a fun day. Although it felt kind of like being at Disneyland for just one day, when everyone knows that Disneyland is best in two days. We felt like we needed to rush around to see everything, and we didn't quite make it.

But what we saw was great!

Did I hear that the PCC was expensive? Or did I make that up and it's free? I can't remember.

The PCC is expensive. Like practically Disneyland expensive. But it was so fun I guess it was worth it.

I should mention that the PCC is the main source of income for all the students at BYU-H, so I guess it's for a good cause.

I see. Hmm, thought so.
