homecoming 2014 pt.I

Late Tuesday afternoon our doorbell rang and the kids found a pot of frozen water on the porch with this tag attached.

All the kids were happy to help find out what was in the pot.

Now don't get me wrong, she was really excited.

But it was Tuesday and the dance was Saturday, so the time crunch added a little pressure. A girl needs a dress, you know!

We decided to use the same ice theme to respond.

You know, these days a simple, "Will you go to the dance with me?" and a reply of "Yes", simply won't do. Everything has to be over the top.

We decided to write "N" for no and "Yes" on little scraps of parchment paper that we would freeze inside ice cubes. Most of the ice cubes would say "N", but three would say "yes".

This was easier said than done. First the papers floated to the top of the water. Then we filled the ice trays half full and put the papers on top, with the idea that we would freeze more water on top and the paper would be stuck in the middle. Um, yeah, that didn't work. The newly added water quickly melted the existing ice cubes and the papers floated to the top again.

In the end we just peeled off the half frozen papers and arranged the ice cubes into the word "Yes" on a cardboard tray and Rachel and Aaron went over in the dark to leave the answer on Taylor's porch.

Once again, easier said than done.

First of all, Taylor lives on a lane with only one entrance/exit. Rachel was parked on their lane when the Copes drove by, surely seeing her car, even though it was dark outside. But don't worry, she saw them too and slouched down in her seat. Bwahahahahahahah! Aaron who was putting the cardboard tray on the porch, also saw their car approach, so he jumped off the porch and hid in the bushes.

I don't think "cat burglar" will be future occupations for either one.

Wednesday night she went to a friend's house who said she'd help with hair and makeup. (I was super relieved that I didn't have to help, because let's face it, I am OLD.)

Two different makeup styles below. She's freaking out a little (lot) because this is 99% more makeup than she usually wears.

The dress shopping started shortly after the ice drop off Tuesday night. Ideally we could have borrowed a dress. But after thinking about it, we realized that she's so tall and so skinny and we insist on sleeves but no mini skirts, that borrowing was out of the question. We ordered three dresses online from Shabby Apple and paid expedited shipping in the hopes that they'd arrive on time. Why three dresses, you ask? We had no idea, if the dresses would fit, be long enough and/or look cute. Online ordering can be tricky, you know. We ordered three in the hopes that one would work and the other two could be sent back.

The Shabby Apple dresses are below,  I, J and K.

For the record, K was supposed to be navy blue, not pink.

I'm glad we paid expedited shipping so they could send us the wrong color.

Ideally, we'd be shopping for a dress together, but she had school (obviously) followed by work or powder puff each day. So Wednesday I went to TJ Max, Macys and Dillards and bought the rest of the dresses. I brought them all home and she tried on each one to see what she liked.

As you can see in several of the pictures, she's still wearing face paint from Powder Puff, which is always a cute homecoming look.

(Also, our homecoming is semi-formal.)

Here's the rundown:

A- too ugly and witch-like. In my defense, it looked cuter on the hanger. (I think?)

B- Stick and I really liked this one, but it has teensy little beads on it that she didn't like.

C- Too big and she didn't like the bow/skirt.

D- Too big and she didn't like the pearl broach, which Stick referred to as a shiny grenade.

E- Same dress as D but different color. Too short and she didn't really love it.

F- This one was really, really cute, but what you can't see in the picture is that it doesn't fit at ALL in the bust.

G- Too wide and short.

H- Clearly sleeveless and too short, but I actually bought two of this dress, so that if she liked it I could add sleeves and length using fabric from the second dress.

I- Pretty, but a little too big and sort of plain.

J- The winner! She liked this one the most, but the green sleeveless (H) was a close second.

K- Wrong color.

B-2 - We really tried to talk her into this dress (B) and I made her take a picture in it twice, but she wouldn't budge thanks to those horrible minuscule beads. In the end it worked out because she saw at least three girls wearing it at the dance.

Friday night and Saturday morning, she was able to go shoe shopping with Bekah happily tagging along. They bought some shoes and a necklace.

Stay tuned for part II.....

Oh wow! That is a lot of dresses. Whew! And so glad you found one she liked. It is beautiful! And also awesome on the hair and makeup. I can't even imagine having to help with that. She looked super "stunning"! Aw, how cute. They make a great looking "couple". Glad she had fun! :)

Yes, well done! She was so beautiful! I loved a lot of her dress choices. You better start shopping early for prom, right...?
