Hawaii: day 11
1.3.2014
Our last play day! (Tomorrow is Sunday.)
Stick decided to be on the ball and help us get up early enough to try the Makapu'u lighthouse hike once again. We got there right at 7am and found a parking spot. (yay us)
Do you see the lighthouse below? This is the view from our beach with my zoom lens.
Now as it's clearly been stated before and I am sure it will be stated again, I am not a hiker. But I knew this hike was one mile up and one down, so I figured I could handle it.
I'm so glad we did it. It was so gorgeous! All the way up and all the way down.
Koko crater.
All you plant lovers, please notice that between Harry and the lighthouse there are cactus! How crazy is that?
It's a total guess, but I think our beach house is approximately by the red arrow below.
More crazy vegetation for all you plant lovers out there.
On our way back down, we realized that we could see whales out in the Ocean. All over the place you could see them spouting. We wished we'd brought our binoculars.
You can't really tell by this picture, but the boys are sitting on a cliff giving me a heart attack.
On the way back down I noticed all kinds of crazy little plants growing right out of the black rocks.
We also passed about 20+ Cub Scouts and their families hiking up the trail.
Must be nice to be a Cub Scout in Hawaii.
Back home again for a beautiful sunny day of play.
Bekah had some successful boogie boarding.
(video)
She also had some successful body boarding, but unfortunately this isn't one of the successful times.
(video)
Let me introduce the Hawaiian Forest Gump.
Every single day we were there this old guy ran up and down the beach.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.
Every single day.
Run Forrest run!
This picture has nothing to do with anything but seriously, don't you wish this was the corner of your bedroom?
On our way to Waikiki that afternoon we met our landlord (all we'd done is e-mail with him) who had come over to repair fences that blew down in the storm the night before.
We were driving away but he choppped open some coconuts for us so we could try the fresh milk.
(I passed since I don't actually like coconut, but the kids all tried it.)
(Also, I am a wimp.)
(But you knew that.)
So, Waikiki.
We did not like it.
Not one little bit.
We went to the beach and after about three minutes the kids were speechless and couldn't understand why anyone would go to the beach there.
We went to a mall where the kids did the souvenir shopping they'd been wanting to do all week. It was a super upscale mall, so the only store they could even shop in was called the ABC store. But the kids all found a treasure to bring home so everyone was happy.
This sand sculpture was at the Sheraton Hotel, where we went to the beach.
When we got back to the house we were excited to spend our last night on the beach.
Imagine my grumpiness will you when we discovered that there were people camping on the beach, literally right in front of our house.
WHAT?THE?WHAT?
(I'm fairly certain that camping is not even allowed.)
I had plans, people.
I had glow sticks, people.
And my plans did not involve all y'all.
And seriously, the beach is 5.5 miles long, must you camp right in front (technically behind) of our house?!?!?!?
Harumph.
Well let's end on a happy note, shall we?
It was a Christmas miracle, but I remembered to take our annual "kids walking on the beach" picture. And it was sunny. And I didn't have to kill anyone. Yay us.
This isn't it, but I do think it's funny.
