May 21, 2013

the odds are not currently in our favor.

Remember when Aaron was sick weeks ago?  He had barely recovered from his ear surgery and then he got sick. Being the (sometimes questionably) good mother that I am, I waited for nine days to take him to the doctor.  Turns out, he had pneumonia. My mothering pride took a hit, upon hearing the diagnosis and he was oddly elated to learn it was pneumonia and not "cancer" or "valley fever" which he had self diagnosed after learning (obviously) too much in health class.

ONE out of six. (Bear with me, this will make sense shortly.)

Then sometime in the next week, I got sick and after a few days was given the diagnosis of "strep throat." Lovely.

Then sometime after that, one by one the rest of the children started coughing like a lung was ready to exit the premises.  Anticipating our trip to San Francisco last weekend, and knowing that I had had highly contagious strep throat, I took FOUR kids to our pediatrician to ward off the plague before it got any worse while we were out of town. (Poor grandma). The doc decided that Rachel, Thomas and Spencer had a virus and Harry had pneumonia. So we got him started on that lovely pink bubble gum flavored medicine, packed our bags and left the poor grandparents with kids who still sounded like they were hacking up lungs.

TWO out of six.

While in San Francisco, I got an email informing me that Spencer had missed yet another day of school. Grandma had to take him back to the doctor where it was determined that he too had pneumonia.

THREE out of six.

We are back from our trip and Harry is still sick despite being on meds for six days, Spencer is still sick despite being on meds for four days and I would bet a whole lot of money that Rachel and Thomas both have pneumonia too. They both came home from school yesterday and fell sound asleep.

FOUR and FIVE out of six.

Oddly enough, Rebekah is mostly healthy. She can cough on command if others are getting yummy pink bubble gum flavored medicine or cough drops are being handed out, 'cause who wants to miss out on that fun?  Personally I think she's too ornery to get sick. Or maybe that wild fluffy hair is trapping germs before they can actually enter her system. I suppose time will tell.

Now, I can't even remember why I started blogging about all this.

Maybe to document what we did in May 2013? Which shall now and for evermore be know as the month the black plague hit our home. Or maybe to document the actual reason my kids missed days and days and days and days of school when the "school goal of the month" was perfect attendance for the month of May!  (Fail.)

I don't know. But here's to hopin' for a better June.

It's gonna get better, right?
