Book Reviews

My Antonia by Willa Cather

"Written in 1918, it is the story of Antonia Shimerda, who arrives on the Nebraska frontier as part of a family of Bohemian emigrants. Her story is told through the eyes of Jim Burden, a neighbor who will befriend Antonia, teach her English and follow the remarkable story of her life."

I loved this book. An interesting peek into the lives of the emigrants of long ago that made America what it is today.

To Destroy You is No Loss

The Odyssey of a Cambodian Family

by JoAn Criddle

The story of Teeda Butt Mam

"I have lived in three very different worlds. For fifteen years, I was a pampered child of a well to do family in Phnom Penh, then, for four years, a slave in a rural Communist commune. And I am now a professional woman with a demanding career, a wife and mother; an American citizen."

I loved this book, but only recommend it if you have a strong stomach. It details the true story of the communist take over of Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge and the resulting genocide of the Cambodian people. Thus, there are many graphic, horrifying scenes portrayed. It ends happily though and is very thought provoking.

I am currently reading 5 different books (2 seriously). AND I have a waiting list of about 4 others. OH, if only I had free time to read again. Sunday's my only free reading day.

Also, I'm so jealous of you family fun on the Beach! I can't wait until we're rich enough to indulge in that luxiory.
