weekly 2015.1.25

We’ve had a wild week. I pretty much hate it when the kids have no school on Mondays. It’s not that I don’t like having the kid’s home, it’s just that it throws me off schedule for the whole rest of the week.

On Tuesday I got my hair cut. And now five days later, I’m still bitter about it. It’s been almost a year since I’d been last cut so I was surely overdue. I waited so long partly by design because I wanted to grow it out a little. I went to a girl who I’ve been to before and thought she did a good job. On Tuesday I told her I was happy with the current length and only wanted ½” off, with a few small layers. I told her I didn’t want it a-line in the back but straight and that I really hate it when the back is longer than the sides. So what happened next is a complete mystery. She chopped several inches off and layered the life out of it and the sides are much, much shorter than the back. So yeah, I’m grumpy. I debated going back to her and complaining, but I’m afraid I’ll end up looking like Jamie Lee Curtis when she’s done. Yesterday out of desperation I had Rachel at least trim the back up so it looks a little less like a mullet. Rachel did a good job and truthfully it doesn’t look totally horrible, it’s just not at all what I had in mind.

Stick and Thomas went camping Friday night with the scouts out somewhere by Tooele. The boys all slept in a cave which they thought was cool. It was cold, but considering it’s January it could have been much worse.

While the campers were out camping Rachel and I watched “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” because she’s reading in in English. Hello, depressing. It was a beautifully done BBC production but the plot line was the worst.

Thomas and Aaron are still trying to get all the paperwork done for their eagle projects. (I’m starting to understand why everyone groans at the thought of eagle projects.)

Aaron did his very first driving yesterday. He got his permit the day before we left for Hawaii, but hasn’t had an opportunity to drive until now. It’s harder than you’d think for these kids to get their 40 hours of practice in. We live so close to everything that it takes a long time for each five minute driving trip to add up to 40 hours.  He had an indoor soccer game Friday night and got plowed over and lost a big ol chunk of skin off his knee when he hit the turf. (Ouch.) He had fun going to Battle of the Bands at CCHS with a friend this week.

Bekah has had a really loose tooth for a while now. Last night she whined about it for hours but Stick told her he wasn’t pulling it out and she had to do it herself. Finally I reminded her she wanted money so she could buy a Kendama. Happy at the thought of tooth fairy money, she went right in and pulled it out. Ha!

Harry has now joined “Architecture club” at school in addition to Science club and Sphero club. Isn’t he a little busy social bee this year?! He wasn’t his usually spunky self yesterday at basketball and I thought he was just having an off day. Once we got home I realized he was running a fever. He seems to be fine today though.

Spencer has “late start” at school on Fridays. Friday is also his day to be in charge of the kitchen. For the last few weeks he gets his kitchen work and his piano practice done before school. Then after school he heads directly to a friend’s house for hours. Friday he called to check in a few times, but ran around with friends non-stop until 9:45pm. How is it that the 11 year old has the most active social life of all our kids?

Our across the cul-de-sac neighbors called this morning and invited us to dinner tonight. They have a daughter who is ten, that plays with Bekah quite a bit. It was fun to get to know them better. They have two cute little fluffy dogs that all the kids adored, but I stand firm in my no dog stance. Besides, why buy a dog when the neighbors have some and you get all the benefit and none of the pain?

Over and out.
