summer stations
Despite the fact that we have been CAH-razy busy this month, there have been a few normal quiet days.
Back in June right before school got out, I read this post and decided I would copy the idea, but change it a little to meet our needs.
(yeah, no "tv" station, sorry kids!)
On regular old, boring, long, hot, summer days, when nothing else is going on, we do "Summer Stations." We're averaging about 2-3 days each week. Only the four boys participate because Rachel is too busy with babysitting neighbors every.single.day and tennis. Rebekah is too little to really do the stations but she usually participates in the "Creativity" station.
Each station takes 30 minutes and there are 4 stations, so the whole thing only takes 2 hours. I usually aim to start at 10am and be done at noon.
Creativity Station:
At the kitchen table, using a bag full of art supplies.
I bought a bunch of clearance art supplies at JoAnnes, so I put something new in each week to keep it fun.
Music Station:
At the piano (duh).
Scholastic Station:
At the kitchen desk (or couch)
10 minutes of handwriting practice (Do you have boys? If so, you will totally understand this.)
20 minutes of math worksheets or once a week, math games on my iPad.
Aaron is doing math online at KahnAcademy.
Reading Station:
In the office
10 minutes Scriptures
20 minutes "free" reading
(We're having a Book of Mormon challenge this summer, so the 10 minutes helps the kids to remember)
All in all, it's been a good system. We don't do it everyday and I planned that from the beginning, so there is no pressure. But on the regular ol' stay at home days, it works really well to give the kids something to do.
On that note, Boo Hoo! Summer is more than half over, we start school in 5 weeks.
