chair care

Years ago we inherited some chairs that we've used at our kitchen table ever since. A few years after we got them, I decided that I didn't love their golden oak color, so I decided to paint them. I spent a long time priming and painting them black with a paint brush.  I wonder now why I didn't use spray paint? Who knows.

But, I never got around to the clear coat on top. A clear protective coat.

Sure enough, within a short amount of time, my children began scraping the paint off with their fingernails. You may ask yourself, if this made me happy? It did not.

I've lived with the chipped chairs for several years but a few weeks ago I decided I couldn't take it anymore!

So then I spent hours scraping off all the paint that I spent hours putting on. Awesome.

Then I stained the chairs with Old Masters Gel Stain in Spanish Oak. Which is for all intents and purposes, black.

Now let me clarify something, I am not a patient crafter or worker or whatever you want to call it.  When I get a bee in my bonnet, I want to do the project now and have it finished NOW.

This was not a quick project. Take a good look at the chair, it has all kinds of small curving wood on it that had to be dealt with.

I put three coats of stain on, and after each coat, the chair needed to dry 24 hours.  Then yesterday I put three coats of rub-on-poly, waiting 3 hours between coats.  Now it needs to dry for 24 hours, then it can be used!

Finally, we can get our chair back after several weeks of drying it in our laundry room. Logical place, don't you think?!

I'm really happy with how it turned out. I loved the gel stain, it was super easy to use and I hope, hope that the kids can't scrape it off.

I'm ready to be done with this project, but, alas, another chair awaits.....
