The kids and I went to visit my brother-in-law yesterday. He's a MD. As in Doctor of Opthamology. Our eyes needed a little doctorin'.
Four of us had appointments so we were there for a long time. Eventually the kids made themselves right at home, figuring that we were special since the doctor was our uncle. They wandered around a little, checking out the office under the fog of dilated eyes.
Hootis wandered over to the secretary and asked her, "What is that?" Referring to the virtually pre-historic contraption known as a typewriter.
The kind secretary helpfully loaded a clean sheet of paper and gave instruction on how to use the typewriter. How thrilling!
Each kid took a turn typing a letter to Uncle Doctor, telling him things like: "It's way more fun to come to your office than the time we got our eyes checked at WalMart" and "Those drops you put in my eyes feel like boogers". You know, the usual doctor/patient stuff.
Hootis was temporarily stymied when she made a mistake and couldn't find the "delete" button. The secretary then introduced her to the wonders of erasing mistakes with an eraser tape.
On our way out of the office Hootis was quick to tell me how "awesome" that typewriter was! "You don't even need a monitor or a printer or anything! I totally want one for Christmas!"
Poor little 6th grader with a computer, monitor, wireless printing and internet capabilities, right in her room. All she ever needed was a good old trusty Underwood!
Technology is sooo overrated.
