Maui: Day 2

We got up the next morning and went to breakfast at a local place. The humidity made me feel just like I was back in Ecuador.  I was amused to see all the people drinking steaming cups of coffee when it was so hot outside.

Now that we were seeing Maui in the daylight, I could tell it was very different from Oahu. Everywhere we drove there were sugar cane fields, which we never saw in Oahu.

Even the mountains in Maui looked different.

Here's what they looked like in Oahu:

These trees, however, were on both islands. This isn't a great picture but man do I love these Hawaiian trees. And for that matter, all the Hawaiian trees, and all the Hawaiian flowers, and all the green all the time.

After breakfast, we went down to the beach in front of our condo. The weather report said rain was coming, so we decided to go quickly while the sun was still out.

It was a beautiful morning, and we ended up staying much longer than we thought we would, resulting in a sunburn.

And the rain never came.

That afternoon, after a trip to Costco for food, lunch and a power nap, we headed out to find a nearby beach that supposedly had black sand.

We took a couple of wrong turns but did eventually find it at Makena State Park.

It was spectacular.

The sky was dark and misty which just added to the beauty.

After the black sand beach, we drove about a mile or so and found another beach.

Also beautiful, but with regular colored sand.

There was a lifeguard posted, but he was advising "no swimming."

There were a lot of people, but the waves were crashing in so hard that not a single person was swimming.

The pretty path back to the car.

Then we drove some more towards the south east end of the island and came across what is known as the lava fields.

(And a little lava colored goat in the road.)

Acres and acres of land that is covered in lava rock from the last time Mount Haleakala erupted, a long, long, long time ago.

It was both eerie and amazing.

Can you see the lava goat?

Then we went home and Stick BBQ'd the best steak I've ever eaten in my life, for dinner.

The end of day two!
