fairchild challenge 2012
Rachel participated in a contest for her school called the Fairchild Challenge.
What is the Fairchild Challenge you ask?
"The Fairchild Challenge is a multidisciplinary, environmental education program designed to give high school students an opportunity to express their opinions. By appealing to their innate sense of creativity and curiosity, the Fairchild Challenge invites students to investigate the most difficult environmental issues, devise imaginative and effective responses to the issues, and take action to address them."
So, basically it's a tree-hugger competition.
She made her own "Toms" and entered them into the "Recycled Fashion Design" competition.
She sewed the tops out of PJ flannel and then sewed the tops to old flip-flop bottoms.
Her shoes were chosen at the school competition to go to the Regional Competition which was held Saturday.
When it came time to model the recycled fashions, her school was short a model.
Rebekah was more than happy to help out by modeling a bracelet made out of Starburst wrappers.
(Please notice the awesome blue Fairchild Challenge T-shirt)
These girls below are modeling a bubble wrap jacket and assorted Capri-Sun purses and backpacks.
Someone submitted the dress Rachel is wearing and then didn't show up to model it (probably out of embarrassment!) The group quickly agreed that Rachel was the only one who could even fit into the dress, so she put it on, newspaper ruffles, soda tabs and all.
Way to take one for the team Rachel!
A closeup for your visual (?) pleasure.
The "Fahms" is some kind of combination of the names of the girls on Rachel's team.
Oh, you didn't know she was on a team? She didn't start out on a team, but then somehow some of her friends got involved. Rachel did all the actual work, one girl wrote a short paper about it and the other girl presented them during the competition. (Sounds like a typical school team project.)
Rachel won third place in the competition.
Rebekah was miffed that she didn't win an award for her modeling.
Fashion school here we come!
