weekly 2014.12.8
We’ve had a nice Sabbath day. In a funny moment at sacrament meeting, they got ready for the opening hymn and no one was there to lead the music. Since we are always sitting closest to the front of the chapel, before I knew what I was doing, I jumped up and went up to lead the music. So that was odd. But I do like to sit on the stand and see everyone, who I can’t normally see because of that whole 2nd row thing we do.
Also at church our bishopric counselor talked about how he is trying to use his time more wisely and quit wasting time on his phone playing things like “Trivia Crack”. His message obviously went straight to Rachel and Aaron’s hearts because they came home, downloaded Trivia Crack and started playing like addicts, until I (temporarily) confiscated their respective devices.
We spent the afternoon watching “Tora Tora Tora,” since it’s the anniversary of Pearl Harbor today, and the actual event took place on a Sunday, we broke our “no tv” on Sunday rule. Are you aware of Stick’s love for “Tora Tora Tora”? It’s deep and wide. My love for this movie is narrow and thin. Really narrow and thin. (We’ve agreed to disagree.) The movie finished one minute before the Christmas devotional and then we watched the KBYU special on Handel and the Messiah. I was technically making cookies, but the kids watched it. We then realized why we don’t watch tv on Sunday, way too many wasted hours! Well, I guess not really wasted, we did have a history lesson and church stuff and then more history, but still—Next week? No tv.
I realized that it was exactly one year ago today that we came home from Puerto Rico and the weather was frigid. As Stick would say, “booger freezing” weather. Today it was almost balmy when we got out of church. As much as it pains me to admit it, I think I need a little more cold in order to feel fully Christmasy. A snowflake or two wouldn’t hurt. (But just two, two snowflakes will do it.)
Last night we watched “The Giver.” My love for it was deep and wide. I haven’t read the book in a long, long time but I thought they did a great job adapting it for the big screen. They weren’t totally true to the original story, but pretty close. Very thought provoking movie, we had a good conversation about it today. It totally made me appreciate our world and all the good, bad and ugly it contains.
We started the Jr. Jazz basketball season with three games yesterday. Aaron doesn’t start until January. Stick is coaching Spencer’s team and they got a win. Thomas’ team, who has a mom coaching that knows nothing about basketball (she fully admits it) also miraculously got a win. And Harry’s team got a win, with him scoring half of his team’s points. He told me right before the game that he had butterflies in his stomach, cute boy. The opposing team’s coach apparently could see right off the bat that Harry was going to be a threat and started telling his kids to double-team Harry. Which is not allowed at that age and it took the Ref half the game to realize it, but Harry was awesome and still did some damage. Hopefully the wins continue and the boys all have fun. Bekah told me again this week that she is not going to be a sports girl, she is going to be a dancing girl. I’m still trying to mentally prepare myself for this.
Bekah had a wicked case of Croup this week. She was incredibly sick for about 24 hours, but then it passed. She spent the whole night Monday night struggling to breathe, which totally scared me. It didn’t even occur to me that it could be Croup, we haven’t had Croup in about 10 years. The doctor said it’s really bad right now and everywhere. Because I was up with her all night by morning I was completely delirious. Somehow in my delirium I thought it was Wednesday morning when Stick leaves for work around 7:30-8ish, so I kept sleeping, knowing that he would make sure the kids got out the door ok. But it was actually Tuesday morning when he leaves at 6am. I was so surprised when I did wake up to see that Harry got himself up, set out all the Christmas nativities, ate breakfast, and got himself out the door at the right time to catch his ride to Sphero club. What a great boy.
Harry and Jens (his friend next door) have also spent some time this week coloring various Christmas cards which they made copies of. Then they took all the cards and put them in the neighborhood mailboxes. Which may be a violation of Postal code, but it’s just so cute, I don’t have the heart to tell them. And, since I’m convinced we have a blind mailman, I figure they’re safe.
Rachel went to the CCHS Christmas dance last night with some friends. She was bummed out that the theme was Tropical Christmas, because she had an awesome Christmas sweater all ready to go. She had fun though and came home sweaty and deaf ‘cause the music was so loud.
Thomas is playing “Joseph” tomorrow night in our ward “Walk to Bethlehem.” Aaron was asked originally but he said no thanks.
I am really, really, really trying to finish painting Harry & Bekah’s room. I knew when I started it weeks ago, that this is a horrible time of year to start a room painting project but yet, I did it anyway. Duh. Hopefully I will finish this week. I’m 99.5% done so that last little bit should be a breeze, right?!?!?!?
Whew, this is getting long. Have I mention anything about Spencer? Let just say that he’s given me a Christmas list and it’s has about four addendums, so far.
Stick and the kids put the lights on the house and on our flag pole, which makes me super happy, ‘cause I’m cheesy like that. I also returned our dark Christmas cards to Costco and ordered new ones, that turned out much better so that made me cheesily happy too.
Over and out.
