Hawaii: day 4

12.27.2014

We decided to take our snorkeling gear to a place better suited to snorkeling than our beach. After some Googling, Stick decided that Turtle Bay would be our best option.

It was on the north side of Oahu, and took more than an hour to drive there. If you are in a hurry, Hawaii is not the place to drive. I loved the drive though, I like to see the regular towns, and how all the regular people live.

The strangest thing of all though happened before we even left our little town of Waimanalo.

The road out of town is a little two lane county road. We had only been on it for a few minutes when we realized that five cop cars in a row had just passed us. Then a bunch of black suburbans, more cop cars, and a couple of ambulances followed by more suburbans.

Then we realized.

We had just passed President Obama.

Obviously we didn't know which car he was in, but surely he was there. He was staying at a place just 8 miles north of us.

In fact I just read on the www that he spent several hours on Christmas day at Bellows Beach, which was about a five minute walk from the beach where we were on Christmas day.

Who knew?!?!?

Anywho, back to us!

We drove to Turtle Bay, and man, it was crowded, but we managed to get a spot to sit.

The snorkeling was fun and the kids caught on right away.

They loved seeing all the neat fish and assorted sea creatures swimming around.

I like snorkeling too, but it's a mental battle for me.

I'll be floating along fine breathing through the tube when all of the sudden I can't breathe and I feel like I'm going to drown. The kids did much better than me. Although Rachel said it's a battle for her too.

I seem to only have pictures of Rachel, but all the kids were there.

I'm pretty sure someone in my family is in this picture out in the water floating around, but I have no idea who or where they are.

Same with this pic....

Even Bekah snorkeled. She was super scared at first and freaked out, but Stick managed to calm her down and then she totally did it.

She will tell you that snorkeling was her favorite part of the trip. In fact, she asked for days afterward if we could go do it again.

We stopped at Wili Willi's Shave Ice for a treat afterwards.
(ALA, I'm laughing, not sneezing.)

I guess the Hawaiians call it Shave Ice, and I call it a snow cone.
Po tato - po tahto.

They were super yummy. We had to laugh though because Bekah wasn't paying attention and dumped most of hers out on the table. Then Stick and I both did the same exact thing a few minutes later. Duh. I suppose if we were proper Hawaiians, we'd know how to eat shave ice without dumping most of it on the ground.

On the way home we stopped at the Laie temple.
It appeared to be closed and under construction. Although there were people walking around outside, along with sister missionaries who were oddly all wearing the same exact dresses.

I didn't think to take a picture*, but here's one thanks to the www.
