Hawaii: day 5
12.28.2014
Sunday!
The LDS church was located about five or six blocks away from our bungalow, which was convenient. We attended the Waimanalo ward and it was so packed we could barely get a seat. The kids had asked beforehand if there would be men wearing skirts, but I told them I thought that was Tahiti. I was wrong, a couple of the men had on lava lavas.
We loved the ward. They were so friendly and warm and touchy (ha!). I haven't cheek kissed that many strangers since Ecuador.
At the beginning of sacrament meeting they welcomed us by name (from the podium) along with another visiting family. During the meeting, they sang one of the hymns in Hawaiian from a passed out paper that had the Hawaiian version photocopied on it. Once the closing prayer had been given, they invited us and the other visiting family (from UT too) up to the stand where they sang "Aloha Oe." While singing, a sister gave us all a cheek kiss and a crocheted lei around our neck. It was SO awesome. I happened to glance over just in time to see when Thomas realized the lady coming toward him was going to kiss him on the cheek. The panic on his face was classic.
We attended the full block and the other highlights included a teensy frog hopping around in Sunday School that eventually got squished under someone's foot, then I led the music in RS and Aaron played the piano in Priesthood meeting, just like he does at home! We wouldn't want him to get rusty on vacation, now would we?!
The kids all loved Primary and Spencer said it was the "Funnest craziest primary class he'd ever been to, complete with several old lady teachers (his words-not mine) that were hilarious."
Post church selfie (groupie?) with leis.
The only way everyone would fit was in the window.
Later on that day, Stick and I took a walk with Harry.
He treasures alone time with just us, so no one else was invited.
Harry especially loved his lei.
I'm pretty sure he wore it single day, and he wore it home on the plane.
When in Rome....you know.
Finally, Harry wanted a picture of the crabs that are all over the beach. They are the exact same color as the sand and hard to see. They move really fast and burrow into the sand in a split second.
I wish I had a picture from my good camera and not my phone, but you get the idea.
We finished off the day with a long excruciating boring confusing tiresome game of "7 Wonders."
We got this game for Christmas after ALA recommended it and hauled it all the way to HI.
I do not enjoy games that last hours and this game was only supposed to be 30-45 minutes, which I figured I could handle.
HOWEVER, there should have been a disclaimer.
The first round ever played takes 3 hours 45 minutes because no one knows what's going on and everyone is confused.
Yawn.
(On a different day, I was forced encouraged to play again, and while I was still mostly confused, by then everyone else knew what was going on, so it went much quicker. And ALA, when you come, Aaron has big plans to take.you.down. Consider yourself warned. I however, will be no challenge at all.)
