biker dudes
We decided a few days ago to let our boys ride their bikes to school.
Their school is about 1.3 miles away and we figured out a way they can take the back roads and a trail so they don't have to ride on the main busy road.
The first day it was just our three boys, then yesterday Harry's best buddy D joined them.
Today Spencer's buddy E will also join them.
They think it is so great, and I do too.
A bike offers great freedom to a kid.
I remember riding all over our neighborhood as a kid and I know my mom had no idea where I was.
The freedom to roll quickly through the streets, to navigate, and explore, all these things are character building experiences.
It seems to me that society spends a lot of time helicopter hovering over our children.
People don't dare let their children play outside in their very own yard, for fear they will be snatched,
much less ride their bikes around the neighborhood.
Obviously there are dangers, and we are aware of them, but we are counting on strength in numbers.
As long as two or more kids are riding, we feel safe.
In fact, I am so in love with our new bike riding system, I have hung up my car keys.
I say, "Oh you have to go to work? Great, ride your bike!"
"Soccer practice? Great, ride your bike! Don't forget your helmet!"
"Mutual? Scouts? Cub Scouts? Ride your bike!"
And, I had to laugh (a lot) when yesterday, right as the school dismissal bell rang, the sky darkened and the rain poured down.
A little bike ride in the rain never hurt anybody.

Every single time it rains or snows you can be guaranteed to see only two bikes on the bike rake. They belong to us. What? The weather hasn't killed them yet! Love bike riding to school!
