movie review

Being the party animals that we are, we watched Waiting for Superman for date night this weekend.  (Technically I watched it while Stick watched the inside of his eyelids.)

A documentary about the dismal state of public education in America.  It was heart wrenching to watch.  My heart went out to the various parents portrayed who were stuck sending their children to horrible schools.  Schools referred to as "failure factories."  It was inspiring to see those who tirelessly worked to change the failing system, to see how they're often fighting a losing cause.  The people in charge will never give up their power, even at the expense of thousands (millions?) of students.

We've had at least one kid in public schools for the last 8 years.  We've had great teachers, mediocre teachers and a few bad teachers.  I'm grateful we don't live in an area filled with nothing but "failure factories."  I'm grateful we have choices.

I'm sure this movie has a lot of truths-- but most (if not all) documentaries are Filled with lots of Propaganda and a little "movie magic" to make the viewer feel the way they want you to. After all this movie was made by the same people that made "An Inconvenient Truth".

But I would like to see it and see just what they're saying.

So, my friend here in the ward runs this website http://www.saveasd.com/ and I think it is really interesting. She is highly intelligent and totally does her research. She speaks publically and is very involved. She is on the radio and at the capitol all the time. All of her facts check out . . . but I do think it is a little extremist and not enough (yet) to make me pull my kids out of public school. I think most teachers are doing their best to teach the little children. I have only seen one red flag from something "S" brought home one day. If anything, it helps me keep a closer eye on things.
