yuck

When I was a teenager, I used to babysit for a certain family that I really didn't like. Since I liked earning money, I usually said "yes" when they called, but I really hated going to their house. My dislike wasn't so much the kids, they were sort of ok, what I didn't like was the actual house. I remember that it smelled weird, was really messy and the kitchen floor was SO nasty dirty.

This was all very gross to me, because my mom is an amazing housekeeper. I can not remember seeing our kitchen floor dirty. Ever. All I can remember is that we had a clean house and I never thought much about it, until I went to go babysit for the "smelly dirty floor family".

Now enter into this picture my house in the summer of 2008. I've been unable to do much work for weeks on end, due to the impending baby. The kids have been helping, but the fact is, they really stink at housework!

We have a rule that who ever washes the dinner dishes (this rotates weekly) must sweep the kitchen floor when they're done. In theory, this is a great rule, because by the end of the day the floor is in pretty sad shape and needs to be swept. In theory, this means that our kitchen floor gets swept every day, seven times a week.

In reality, we may as well call ourselves the "smelly dirty floor family".

Now that I can function again, I have been madly cleaning the house and trying to make up for a summer of neglect. So yesterday when my plan focused on the kitchen, I swept the floor in preparation for a long overdue mop job. This is what I found:

This is the floor that had been swept by an unnamed child less than 12 hours before. They did a good job, don't ya think?

Remind me to never ask anyone to babysit. We have become that family.

And all this time I have been thinking, "I should go clean her house.....but wait, she keeps saying her kids are doing it." Hmmm......and now this comes out! You are in big trouble. I owe you a big cleaning job. (I have narrowed the family down to two, but am not sure which one you are reffering to. Do tell.)

Amen, Amen, and Amen!!! Like my mom always says, "If you want something done right, do it yourself!". My problem is how are they going to learn if I always do it? I keep hoping that one day it will finally "click" and they will "do it right"!
