I don't really like hearts for valentines
Back in the good old days when I was in 5th grade, we had an activity for Valentines Day that I TOTALLY loved. We spent a good portion of our class "Valentine's Party" making a mailbox out of a shoebox to receive our valentines in. Then we had a contest and voted for the best box. Let me tell you with a blush of pride that my amazing box won both in 5th grade AND in 6th grade. You see, paper crafting is (and was) TOTALLY my element.
If I remember correctly, my mailboxes were flush with precisely cut hearts in all the appropriate shades of red, pink and white. I believe there were 3-D hearts, scalloped hearts and even little paper "springs" that made some of the hearts shake gently! How amazing and valentiney is that?

Now, flash forward to 2010. Flash forward to motherhood of FOUR boys. Two of these boys were working on their "Valentines Mailboxes" last night. Excitedly I offered, "I have colored paper! Do you want some! How about red, and pink and white!!!!!" (oh joy.) "I'll even help you cut out some hearts!" (be still my heart.)
Proto: "I don't really want hearts on it."
Me: "WHAT? WHY NOT? HOW CAN YOU MAKE A VALENTINES MAILBOX WITH NO HEARTS!!!!"
Proto: "I don't really like hearts for Valentines. This boy in my class made a cool mailbox, it's a toilet, and you pull this lever and flush the valentine!"
Me: (feeling shaky and weak) "What's valentiney about THAT?"
Proto: "Nothing. Do you have some blue paper?"
Me: "Blue??"
Me: (silently) "BLASPHEMY!!!!"
Me: (sob) "Here's some blue paper..........."
My boy is proudly going to school tomorrow with a cougar blue mailbox, with the words, "BYU -- #15" and a drawing of a football on it.
Makes his mama proud.
