vamos a comer!
This is a plantain.
Platano in spanish.
A cousin to the common banana.
I ate it in Ecuador a lot.
It was actually good.
Shocker, I know.
You don't peel it and pop it in your mouth like that boring old banana.
It's really hard and starchy like a potato.
Not sweet at all, unless you wait until the peel turns yellow.
(It's also eaten sweet and yellow, but not by me, if I have a choice.)
So you cut it open, slice it, fry it, squish it with a cup, then fry it again.
Really healthy.
Ok, not so healthy, but really yummy.

Why this culinary blast from the past you ask?
~
Hootis had to try 5 new fruits/vegetables that she'd never eaten before, for her Health class.
I bought Plantain, Mango, Papaya, Blood Oranges, and Spaghetti Squash.*
~
The only food that everyone liked was the Plantain. The rest received mixed reviews.
~
I personally declined the Mango and Papaya. I sometimes wonder if I eat too much food from South of the Border if my stomach bugs from South of the Border will come alive.
~
They're dormant you know.
*Stick had an allergic reaction to one (or more I guess) of these foods. We don't know which one though! He's developed a few really odd food allergies in the last few years.
Don't even think of offering him a pistachio.
We don't like visiting the ER.
